Finding a domain name that works for your business can be tricky. When you’re starting out on your website design and go to check what is available you often have to revert to unconventional domain names to get one that works.
Luckily real estate is a very personal business, so finding something like “adamdeyoungrealestate.com” that uses your name in the URL can be done relatively easily. However, if you’re looking for a certain domain name and can’t find it, it might be tempting to take advantage of the new .REALTOR domain that the National Association of REALTORS® has secured.
DON’T DO IT!!
Having a domain that does not end in .com can be detrimental to your business for many reasons. The first and clearest is that .com is now a standard.
Imagine for a moment if the domain name for energizer batteries was Enegizer.batteries. Wouldn’t that confuse you?
What if the domain for McDonalds was Mcdonalds.hamburgers. It just doesn’t fit.
To expect your clients/customers to remember that your website is listed at a .REALTOR domain name when the vast majority of websites that they navigate to on a daily basis are .coms is unrealistic at best.
The other thing to remember is that if you’re not able to get the .com that you want someone else has it and they are going to benefit from traffic that is most likely for you.
Will the .REALTOR domain set you apart from the competition? Maybe. But it might set you apart too much to the point where new and potential clients just simply can’t find you online.
